"We'll Take the Heat For It": CDProjekt RED Confirms Cyberpunk 2077 Delayed to November
Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed, developer CDProjekt RED announced today via the game’s official Twitter account.
The game is now set to release November 19th instead of the its currently slated September 17th release date. This is now the third release date announced for the game, which was originally due out on April 16th this year — as announced by Keanu Reeves at E3 2019.
“We won’t ship something which is not ready,” says CDProjekt RED co-founder Marcin Iwfinski and Head of Studio Adam Badowski in a joint letter. “‘Ready when it’s done’ is not just a phrase we say because it sounds right, it’s something we live by even when we know we’ll take the heat for it.”
News of the delay comes just days before Night City Watch — a Cyberpunk 2077 presentation that remains scheduled for June 25th after being delayed out of respect for global Black Lives Matter protests.
Cyberpunk 2077 is content complete, something which the pair also confirm. However, it seems like getting everything in Night City to work together the way the developer wants it is proving to be the challenge. “With such an abundance of content and complex systems interweaving with each other, we need to properly go through everything, balance game mechanics and fix a lot of bugs. A huge world means a huge number of things to iron out and we will spend the additional time doing just that”.
Of course, this delay also raises questions about the release of any next-generation versions of the game. In particular: will Cyberpunk 2077 game be a launch title for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X? CDProject RED had previously expressed that they were focused on the current generation, but the game has since been announced as the first third-party game that will utilise the Xbox Smart Delivery scheme, which gives players a free upgrade to Series X versions of select games they currently own.
Will we find out more during Night City Watch next week? Only time will tell.
