The Division: Heartland has been announced by Ubisoft for Xbox, PlayStation and PC — releasing sometime in 2021 or 2022.
Details are vague at this point, but here’s what we know: The Division: Heartland is a standalone and free to play game set in The Division universe. This original title is under development at Red Storm Entertainment, a studio that has a history of working on Tom Clancy titles and whose catalogue includes Far Cry 3, Star Trek: Bridge Crew and (arguably most importantly) The Division 2.
The Division is clearly a brand that Ubisoft is dedicated to expanding. Alongside this announcement, The Division Mobile was also announced by the publisher. It’s also worth noting that some kind of movie adaptation of The Division starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain is coming to Netflix sometime in the future.
Alan Corre, Executive Director of Ubisoft EMEA said in a press release:
“In the past 5 years, The Division has grown from a very ambitious project at Ubisoft, to a world-renowned franchise reaching 40 million unique players. We are very proud of what our teams have accomplished with this franchise and the amazing universe they have created. The potential and depth of this enables us to explore new and exciting content that will please loyal long-term fans of The Division and new ones alike.”
The fact that this latest title in the Division franchise is not a true sequel and is free to play suggests some change in the game’s traditional formula. It would be easy to speculate that Heartland will be a battle royale-style game. However, with a studio like Red Storm at the helm it may retain more of its original structure and qualities. Hopefully we’ll hear more on this ambiguous, but exciting, new title soon.
