Star Wars: Squadrons has been officially announced by Electronic Arts and is releasing this October. In a cinematic trailer released on Monday, Squadrons looks to deliver players the dream of piloting an X-Wing or TIE Fighter with a full campaign and 5 vs 5 multiplayer action.

The announcement of the game, developed by Motive Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm, comes following a number of leaks including a splash image spotted on the Microsoft Store at the end of last week (as spotted by Eurogamer). This all but confirmed the game’s existence before EA formally and hastily released word about the game and today’s trailer (below) on Twitter.

Falling into the Star Wars timeline just before Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: Squadrons boasts “an original story” that begins following the Battle of Endor. Players will be able to switch perspectives, playing as a pilot for either the New Republic or the Galactic Empire and it’s safe to assume that those are the two characters heavily featured in the trailer. Per an official press release for the game, Star Wars fans can also expect to see a few familiar faces among the game’s “diverse cast of characters”.

As far as multiplayer is concerned, skirmishes will be pre-planned (presumably in a multiplayer lobby) before matches begin. In ‘Fleet Battles’ players will fight it out over control of the other team’s flagship, whilst you can probably expect a more traditional deathmatch from ‘Dogfights’ mode. Multiplayer matches will take place "across known and never-before-seen locations, including the gas giant of Yavin Prime and the shattered moon of Galitan".  Customisation options will be present here too, but EA has stressed these can only be earned through gameplay, and your usual ranking and rewards systems will be in place.

Star Wars: Squadrons launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One X and PC on October 2nd.
