I recently got the opportunity to sit down and play the demo of an upcoming game called Skelattack. It is an action platform from an American developer called David Stanley and is being published by Uzuka. It is still in development but is scheduled to be released in January 2018 and will be available on PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam and also on Xbox One.

The game follows an enchanted skeleton called Skully and his faithful friend Imber the Bat as awake to the sound of an alarm bell ringing in the deepest darkest dungeon which they call home. Human intruders have been sighted in the dungeon and Skully needs to force them back to protect his home. On the journey, you will find other skeletons and demonic entities that can help you or some might just want to chat and thank you for protecting them from the invading humans.

First Impressions from the Demo

I found this concept very appealing as it makes a change to not be an adventurer investigating a dungeon. But flipping the idea on its head and being one of the dungeon dwellers instead is an interesting twist to the genre. And Skully is just so endearing!

The graphics and art style is lovely. I’m a fan of a nicely drawn cartoon so that is something that instantly grabs my attention. The sounds are consistent with a good cartoon and the background music is good as well.

From a gameplay angle, the controls are simple enough for this kind of game but it has some nice mechanics that will set the game apart from other indies in the same genre. As you progress through the game, you will see many familiar obstacles that are classic dungeon platform obstacles likes arrow shooters and sawblades but couple them with tiny one block platforms and wall jumping and you’ve got yourself some pretty annoying things to overcome.

Some of the puzzle elements along the way will do enough to make you frustrated and having to try and try again but luckily the respawn points are many so you won’t find yourself having to replay huge swathes of the game.

I really do have a lot of high hopes for this fun indie game. If you miss playing a good old fashioned platformer then you are going to have a lot of fun playing Skelattack! We will be keeping tabs on this game for sure so keep an eye here for news about its release and any other developments.

It all began with the Atari ST. Then the first home PC. And the rest is history. Although a platformer and RPG lass at heart, I'm willing to give anything a go, and if a game looks quirky then you've got my attention!
