Sony has shared details on PSVR2, its accompanying controllers and how haptic feedback will bring additional levels of immersion to virtual reality gaming. The news comes via CES 2022 in Las Vegas, where the new PlayStation hardware was put in the spotlight during Sony’s presentation — a presentation which also featured the announcement of a Horizon: Zero Dawn VR game, Call of the Mountain, developed by Guerrilla Games.
The second iteration of Sony’s virtual reality headset has been officially named PlayStation VR2 and is both simpler and more complex than its predecessor. Connected to the PlayStation 5 via a single cable, the new hardware will allow players to experience VR via a 4K HDR OLED display, a 110 degree field of view, foveated rendering, a resolution of 2000 x 2400 per eye and frame rates from 90hz to 120hz.
The headset will also feature inside out tracking via cameras built into the hardware and eye tracking. Unlike the original PSVR headset, this will allow the headset to be tracked in space without the use of external cameras. Sony's presentation below starts at the VR2 segment:
Haptic feedback is also a big part of the PSVR2 experience, with such feedback also being built into the new headset. This feature will allow players to experience sensations such as the pulse of a character or perhaps in-game objects passing close to the player’s head.
Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan led the PlayStation portion of the presentation, describing virtual reality as “central” to PlayStation’s innovative approach to new technologies.
Following up in a statement, SIE’s senior vice president of platform experience Hideaki Noshino described PSVR 2 as “taking gaming to a whole new level” thanks to “a greater sense of presence”. Nishino continued: “With the headset on and controllers in hand, players will feel a heightened range of sensations unlike any other – thanks to the creativity of the game worlds being built by our world class developers, and the latest technology incorporated into the hardware.”
The controllers for PSVR 2 were less of a mystery, with PlayStation officially revealing them last year via the PlayStation Blog. The new controllers will take on a new shape, will feature analog sticks and face buttons as well as the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers found in the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller.
No release window was given for PlayStation VR2.
