PlayStation VR is getting a next-generation update for PlayStation 5, but it’s not coming any time soon. Announced Tuesday on the PlayStation Blog, the sequel to PlayStation’s first foray into virtual reality is now in development alongside a brand new controller, and promises an “ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity”.

The announcement comes four years after the launch of PlayStation VR, a hardware addition that delivered a new way to play and brought titles such as Blood & Truth, Beat Saber and Astro Bot: Rescue Mission into the PlayStation ecosystem.

The updated PlayStation VR hardware is in the very early stages of development, with Hideaki Nishino, PlayStation’s Senior Vice President, Planning & Management confirming that it will not launch in 2021. In his post, he writes:

“Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.”

Utilising the knowledge gained from the release of PlayStation VR, the next-gen hardware will enhance resolution, movement tracking, field of view and player input. A new controller will “incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics,” and a single cable will connect the hardware to the PlayStation 5. Nishino states that the idea is to create “future-proof” technology.

PlayStation VR had sold five million units as of January 2020 (per UploadVR) and, with new hardware on the horizon, it’s now clear that PlayStation is committed to VR gaming for the long-haul.

But what do you think? Are you surprised that PlayStation is going back to the VR well once again?
