PlayStation has announced a partnership with online communications platform Discord. In a blog post from Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, the gaming giant has confirmed the partnership alongside an investment from SIE into Discord.
Discord integration with PlayStation is already in the works too, with plans for rollout in early 2022.
“Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile”
The end goal is to further connect players on the PlayStation platform.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a “minor investment” in the platform during a recent Series H round of funding. No figure has been confirmed.
News of the partnership comes not long after a heavily rumoured Microsoft purchase of Discord, said to have been worth $10 billion (per Bloomberg). The online communications platform hosts communities across the gaming space and beyond, providing access to text and voice chat for over 140 million users.
SIE will have more to share “in the coming months,” so expect to see more news of the partnership and how the service will integrate with the PS5 and its services in future PlayStation presentations.
