Madden NFL 21 is the first of EA’s slate of annual sports games to be officially announced — not that another game in this long-standing American football franchise comes as a surprise. However, per Eurogamer, the addition of Madden 21 to Steam is a bit of a revelation and could mean big things for EA Sports games going forward.
The debut trailer for Madden NFL 21 is much the same as it is every year. Starring Baltimore Ravens’ Quarterback Lamar Jackson, the game certainly looks the part. Blink and you’ll miss them, but a handful of incremental updates to the game were also mentioned including: a new skill stick for ball carriers, new pass rush control and the ability for players to perform their own celebrations.
Releasing this August, it will become the first game in the franchise available via Steam, with other EA Sports games — such as the still to be announced FIFA 21 — likely to follow.
EA has begun to embrace Steam this year, with non-sports titles like Command & Conquer Remastered already appearing for sale via Valve’s store. The publisher has also added a string of legacy titles in the Battlefield and Dragon Age franchises. Previously, all EA games were only purchasable from the publisher’s own Origin storefront.
Madden NFL 21 releases on August 28th 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, with a Stadia version of the game to be released in “winter”. Announcements for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game are to follow, however EA has confirmed that players who purchase on either PS4 or Xbox One will have "Dual Entitlement" to next gen versions of the game.
