FIFA 21 will officially release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on October 9th. The news was confirmed by EA following a very quick first look at the next-generation of EA Sports two key franchises at EA Play Live last week.

In a surprise move, given that FIFA is EA Sports’ most popular game, we have yet to see an official trailer for the game. Those looking for a glimpse can check out the combined FIFA and Madden trailer below.

The focus on next-gen consoles for EA is clear. Unlike their initial message which, without anything more than blink and you’ll miss it footage, can be incredibly vague. Sure, it’s easy to understand how “blazing fast load-times” and improved lighting could make FIFA 21 stand out. We can also read between the lines to speculate on how the PS5’s haptics will let players “feel the rhythm of the game in [their] hands." However, “enhanced animation technology,” “off-ball humanisation,” and “gameday immersion” are harder to imagine without actually seeing the game.

Naturally, we assumed that a PC version would be our first chance to see all this technology in the flesh. EA isn’t thinking like that though. In fact, the publisher has confirmed that FIFA 21 on PC will be the same game players find on current-generation consoles. As was pointed out in Eurogamer’s initial report — surely a PC can play FIFA 21 with all the bells and whistles of a next-generation console? An incredibly odd decision for EA that isn’t going down well.

Marketing bullet points aside, not much else has been confirmed about FIFA 21. I suppose we can expect a full trailer soon but, until then, all we have is the information above and the knowledge that the game is a part of EA’s Dual Entitlement scheme — giving players who purchase on current gen consoles access to PS5 and Xbox Series X versions when the time comes. When that will be is anybody’s guess. History dictates that we can expect FIFA 21 at the launch of both PS5 and XSX, but nothing is official just yet.
