Orion is a brand new piece of streaming technology that Bethesda and id Software is offering to developers to make streaming better across the board. In one of the surprises of the show, Orion was debuted at Bethesda’s E3 2019 showcase.

Demoed live with DOOM (2016) being played on a phone at full resolution and 60 frames-per-second, the Orion technology could be a game-changer where Google Stadia and Project xCloud are concerned.

Why? Well, Orion will help game engines — all game engines — better prepared for the streaming future. How? By reducing latency and bandwidth used, which will benefit both players and developers. If you’re interested in the real nerdy side of this, you can watch the video below.

This is usually the kind of announcement that wouldn’t make a press conference like this, but with a focus on streaming technology it’s great to see a company as dedicated to tech as id getting in on the ground floor.

It’ll be really interesting to see if and how Orion affects the industry at large in the years to come.
