Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin was teased during the Square Enix Presents stream during E3 2021 on Sunday, and it’s something completely new for the storied franchise.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is being helmed by veterans Tetsuya Nomura and Kazushige Nojima and developed by Team Ninja. So whilst it looks very much like a Final Fantasy game it is, in fact, an action game with hack and slash combat.

In the trailer we see protagonist Jack slashing through enemies with a giant sword before turning them into red crystals and smashing them. While we’re not sure what that means necessarily, it certainly is a “bold new vision” for Final Fantasy.

Whilst the game isn’t coming out until next year, PlayStation 5 owners have the chance to play a trial of the game until June 24th — something that, oddly, isn’t said in the trailer.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series and PC in 2022.
