Diablo II: Resurrected gives a new lease of life to the classic Blizzard top-down RPG. Described as the “definitive remastering” of the classic game, it arrives on September 23rd for PC, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.
“The Lord of Terror has demanded that we remaster Diablo II,” said Blizzard president J. Allen Brack in a very dramatic statement. “We are excited to do his bidding by bringing Diablo II: Resurrected to PC and console players this September.”
The date was officially announced on Sunday during the Xbox + Bethesda E3 2021 presentation alongside a new trailer showcasing the work that has gone into this updated version of the game which also includes the Lord of Destruction expansion.
The first thing you’ll likely notice is that it looks great. Textures have been updated and the 2D character models are now very much 3D, which is a huge change. For those who prefer Diablo II’s original look, however, you can swap between the new high-fidelity graphics and the original game’s 800 x 600 resolution with just the push of a button.
There have also been plenty of quality of life improvements made (including automatic gold pickup and a larger stash) to preserve the game whilst bringing it close to a modern standard. Speaking of which, the game now runs in up to 4K resolution with the cinematics recreated, and with support for Dolby 7.1 surround audio. Those quality of life improvements also extend to cross progression, allowing players to play the game on any system and move seamlessly between versions.
A beta for Diablo II: Resurrected will take place “on supporting platforms” — whatever that means — sometime in August and will allow players to take control of the Amazon, Barbarian, Paladin, and Sorceress from the core game, as well as the Druid from the included Lord of Destruction expansion. Rest assured, The Necromancer and The Assassin will be available upon the game’s launch in September.
