Did Low-Fi Accidentally Confirm Enhanced PSVR on PlayStation 5?

Low-Fi looks like the Blade Runner VR game that I’ve always wanted to play, however the gritty cyberpunk setting wasn’t the only thing that caught my eye during its debut trailer — that honour falls on the mention of PlayStation 5.

You might ask about the significance of what could rightly be considered innocuous information. Whilst we know that current PSVR hardware will work with the PS5, this is, to my knowledge, the first time “next-gen PSVR” or any such distinction has been made. This begs the question: are we about to see a significant boost to fidelity to PSVR games on Sony’s new console?

Whilst I could very well be reading far too much into this, and am not suggesting there’s a PSVR 2 in the works, in specifying a PS5 release developer IRIS VR has certainly implied that the new console is going to push Sony’s VR hardware. 

Shown off during the Upload VR Showcase, the new trailer (above) shows Low-Fi looking fantastic. The game's neon-lit streets burst with colour whilst everything below looks a little more dingy. There also appears to be a high level of interaction with the world, which is to be expected from such an ambitious project. 

IRIS VR has stated previously that Low-Fi will take place in a “massive non-linear open world,” with “hundreds of crimes and stories to solve and explore.” The game is also set to feature branching dialogue and “photo-realistic NPCs” amongst other things.

Following a successful crowdfunding campaign via Kickstarter last year to, excuse the pun, kickstart the game’s development, the game is now set to release in 2021. How this narrative driven cyberpunk noir story will play is anyone’s guess, but the aspirations for what creator Blair Renaud wants to create couldn’t be clearer.

Low-Fi will release on PlayStation 5, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality in 2021.
