Death Stranding is officially releasing on November 8th 2019 and we have a new trailer for Hideo Kojima’s forthcoming opus alongside it.

Following a leak from PlayStation Taiwan on Wednesday, an epic eight-minute trailer has been unveiled with the release date appearing towards the end.

Showing off a lot more of the game than we’ve seen before, we have confirmation that Death Stranding is two things: 1) an action game and 2) really bloody weird. Although, I think we’d gathered the latter quite a while ago.

Showcasing the game’s combat, some of the exploration mechanics (including vehicles and on-foot traversal) and offering up some surreal glimpses into the game’s story. That actually sounds quite straightforward, but the trailer also features zombie World War I soldiers, demon terrorists and — and this feels pretty tame now — multiple babies in jars. Oh Kojima, you wacky bastard!

Death Stranding is described as a game about traversing a world devoid of connection. With mankind on the brink of extinction it’s Sam (Norman Reedus) who is tasked with re-connecting the “Strands” and presumably humanity as well.

I’ve watched the trailer and that doesn’t really make sense to me either. Speaking of which, watching the trailer is the best way of digesting what Death Stranding actually is.

In a message posted on the PlayStation Blog, the auteur developer tries to give us more of a glimpse of what we’re up against.

“People have created ‘Walls’ and become accustomed to living in isolation.

Death Stranding is a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. It is created so that all elements, including the story and gameplay, are bound together by the theme of the ‘Strand’ or connection.

“As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society, and in doing create new bonds or ‘Strands’ with other players around the globe. Through your experience playing the game, I hope you’ll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.”

Now, there’s a lot to unpack in that statement and I’m sure we’ll be combing through it for clues for weeks and months to come. However, the mention of other players is the biggest hint at some kind of online connectivity. I’m sure we’ll find out more before the game actually hits shelves and thankfully we don’t have too much longer to wait.

Alongside the game on November 8th, 2019 will be a number of special editions (detailed on the PS Blog), but the most striking of them actually comes with a replica baby in a jar. No, I am not joking.
