Cyberpunk 2077 is getting an original anime series in 2022.
Announced during Night City Wire on Thursday, the anime is a collaboration between acclaimed Japanese anime house Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill) and Netflix.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be “a standalone story set in the same universe” that will explore new characters and new stories within the varied districts of Night City. The ten-episode series will follow “a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future”.
Directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Kill la Kill, Promare), Edgerunners has been created with the idea of appealing to fans of Cyberpunk 2077 as well as fans of the cyberpunk genre as a whole. The series will also be scored by Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka, adding even more creative star power to the series.
That’s all we know about Edgerunners at the moment, but the idea of expanding the universe even further is exciting. This announcement follows that of Cyberpunk 2077: Trauma Team — a brand new comic series by Cullen Bunn (Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe), Miguel Valderrama (GIANTS), Jason Wordie and Frank Cvetkovic. The comics will introduce us to Nadia “a citizen of Night City and a sole survivor of a failed rescue mission for the Trauma Team International Corporation”.
“Everything has meaning” in the Cyberpunk universe, so we’re excited to see how all of this pans out.
